History and Philosophy
History
Mag. Claudia Schlegel founded the company in Wien back in 2010, initially under the name "Missperfect". From this grew "Butler Bureau". From her own experience, Claudia Schlegel knows that quality in domestic work requires fine training. She therefore initiated what remains the only training opportunity for exclusive household management in the entire German-speaking region.
In response to numerous client enquiries, the range of services was expanded from 2014. Today, Butler Bureau places top-tier staff internationally and, with its singular butler training, has created an appealing modern profession.
Clients from Switzerland, Germany, Monaco, Liechtenstein, France, Great Britain, South Africa and the United States now trust our distinguished service and swift assistance. We currently draw upon a pool of around 3,000 qualified candidates. Whether a housekeeping couple is needed in Ibiza at short notice, a nanny is required to start the very next day in Frankfurt, or a butler is sought for a journey aboard a yacht — we are there for our clients: entirely in the spirit of traditional Austrian service, for greater quality in domestic work, greater satisfaction among employers and greater enthusiasm on the part of employees.
Philosophy
With our exclusive services we find the finest candidate on the market for you — and as swiftly as possible. But not only that. Our aim is to find a suitable companion who will remain with you for the long term. For this is what our candidates wish for too. They seek a position for life, where they feel comfortable, respected and valued. They are then ready to do everything to the employer's fullest satisfaction.
From all the applicants and candidates, we select those most suited to the position in question on the basis of submitted documents, telephone conversations and personal meetings. With a proven and standardised interview technique we examine candidates on essential criteria and experience, discuss the position in detail and verify references on request.
As the engaging client, you receive a pre-selection of individuals best matched to your requirements profile. But do not be surprised — in many cases there is only one candidate who fulfils every condition.
We can, of course, only work with what the market offers and cannot conjure forth a perfect ideal person. It is your task as employer to draw the very best from your staff member. We are happy to support you in this with training and work planning. Should things not work out with a particular candidate, we will commence a renewed search within two months of engagement.
In Conversation with Claudia Schlegel
How long has BUTLER BUREAU existed, and how did the idea come about?
The school was founded in 2010, born of a need I had identified through personal experience. There was no training for private household management in Austria. Only BUTLER BUREAU offers the opportunity in the German-speaking region to acquire well-founded knowledge in exclusive household management. This is now also possible through our Online Academy for all those who cannot attend the course in Wien.
Owing to the continual demand from employers for qualified household staff, the placement service was established and expanded with training as a House Manager or Butler. The advantage for the employer is that a professional standard of knowledge is assured across the household professions. New staff can therefore adapt quickly to the individual requirements of a particular household.
How large is the labour market for exclusive household staff — how many graduates find a position, and where?
In Austria there are approximately 3,000 full-time employees in private households. This encompasses housekeepers, private chefs, private chauffeurs, nannies and butlers. The number of butlers is rising, as the butler in the 21st century becomes more of a House Manager — clearing the way for the employers, organising invitations, coordinating household staff, arranging travel and, depending on the size of the team, also preparing breakfast or meals, tidying, serving and even driving. The more versatile the participants, the greater the prospect of a fascinating position at home or abroad. The trend continues to rise.
Internationally, the need is greater still. Butlers and top-tier housekeepers are a sought-after professional group, particularly when well trained. As the only butler school in Austria, we TRAIN and ADVISE on the search for housekeepers and butlers, and we ensure the requisite skills are in place.
What must a candidate bring with them, what does the training impart, and what ultimately distinguishes fine household staff?
Almost anything can be learned, yet butlers and household staff should bring quite particular qualities to the role. These include a refined and courteous bearing, a sense of responsibility, discretion and conscientiousness. A butler must master social situations with poise and adapt entirely to the wishes of the employer. Strong social skills are essential, as are a sense of order and resilience. Restraint, and the genuine pleasure of attending to the well-being of the employer, are of enormous importance. Those who can cook, hold a driving licence and possess fine German and English skills are also at an advantage. Household staff must, after all, be largely unencumbered as regards their time.
